Acting on behalf of both Retailers and Private Developers we understand that Retail is a dynamic fast-moving industry and believe that the combination of our traditional skills and innovative thinking enable us to successfully deliver schemes on time and to budget.
Our experience within the Retail sector includes the delivery of department store fit out programmes, multi occupancy out of town shopping complexes, retail warehousing units, mixed use developments with commercial units and individual shop fit outs.

Auckland Tower - part of The Auckland Project, Bishop Auckland
The Auckland Project is a visitor destination, with a mission to use art and heritage to revitalise Bishop Auckland and the surrounding region. To date, approaching £150m has been committed to achieving this long-term ambition, with £50m worth of construction related contracts awarded to predominantly regional firms. We have provided pre and post contract quantity surveying and principal designer services on numerous developments.

Vertu Motors - Jaguar Landrover, Leeds
Vertu Motors are the sixth largest motor retailer in the UK, with over 120 retail outlets nationwide. We have provided pre and post contract quantity surveying services on numerous developments in Glasgow, Durham, Darlington, Leeds, Bolton, Nottingham, Hereford and London.

The works comprised the upgrading and refurbishment of the retail area within the listed Bettys Tearooms at Ilkley.

This scheme was the fit out of the first unit in the UK for the food and beverage operator, Airport Retail Enterprises (UK) Ltd.

Chester Zoo Islands Project
Chester Zoo is Britain’s largest and most popular zoo with over 1.4 million visitors every year. Islands is a 5.5 hectare, £40 million investment and is the largest and most ambitious project undertaken at any British zoo. Islands seeks to replicate the Indonesian habitats of its resident species featuring scenery from regions such as Panay, Papua, Bali, Sumatra, Sumba and Sulawesi and housing numerous different species, many of which are critically endangered in their native habitat.

Mid Sussex Retail Park, Burgess Hill
The new Mid Sussex Trade Park consists of a 40,000 sqft B&Q and a 8,500 sqft Pets at Home unit built on a former derelict business park site to deliver new employment opportunities for the town of Burgess Hill.

DFS, Westwood Cross, Thanet
This prominent site at the centre of the Westwood Cross Shopping complex in Thanet, Kent was successfully converted from a former builders merchant into a new 12,500 sqft DFS unit complete with new landscaped car park and timber screed service yard.

Redevelopment of Theatre Royal, Newcastle upon Tyne
Thornton-Firkin were appointed as Cost Consultants on the Phase 1 redevelopment of the Grade 1 listed Theatre Royal in the heart of Newcastle. This scheme required the alteration, conversion and extension of the Theatre into the adjacent vacant Bank building.

Chester Zoo Diamond Quarter
Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth recently opened the Diamond Jubilee Quarter of Chester Zoo during her national tour to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of her reign. Britain’s leading zoological gardens now has a contemporary entrance and retail area complete with a ‘free zone’ for an early opportunity to view the zoo’s elephants.

Delaware North Companies
Delaware North Companies (DNC) are a global hospitality management company working in all sectors worldwide and in the UK providing hospitality, catering, food and beverage operations at Wembley, Emirates and Pride Park Stadiums. When DNC moved into the airport sector after they secured a series of tender opportunities with BAA they appointed Thornton-Firkin to act as their cost consultants.

SSP UK
Our Practice has been engaged by SSP UK, an Airport food and beverage operator as one of their approved consultants since 1994 and undertaken Quantity Surveying/Cost Consultancy Services on over one hundred fit out projects. Our relationship with this Client has also led to our Practice developing a bespoke procedures manual and project tracker administration software system.

Capital Shopping Centres
Thornton-Firkin LLP have worked with Capital Shopping Centres as Quantity Surveyors since the early 1970’s and successfully delivered new shopping centres at The Potteries in Hanley, Trinity Walk in Wakefield and Eldon Square in Newcastle. The Newcastle office have since worked continuously with Capital Shopping at Eldon Square and on the purchase of the MetroCentre in Gateshead have carried out numerous projects throughout the Centre.

Simons operate a partnering approach allowing long term relationships to develop. Thornton-Firkin have worked for Simons for over 20 years providing services on a range of developments from refurbishments of small high street retail units to multi-million pound mixed use schemes incorporating retail, offices, hotels and leisure facilities.

Riverside Place, Kendal
K Village consists of an 80,000 sq ft factory outlet retail centre, 24,000 sq ft of commercial offices together with 90 private residential apartments and associated basement car parking and circulation with an overall contract value of £42m. The development also includes a 2000 sq ft heritage centre for K Shoes which began manufacturing in Kendal in 1842.
