Helsby High School, Frodsham

Helsby High School was originally conceived in 1938 as a split Boys and Girls Grammar School, but due to the shortage of building materials during World War II the schools were not completed until 1949. The Girls and Boys Schools were amalgamated as part of the Comprehensive education system, but due to the symmetrical design of the buildings circulation routes were extremely constrained resulting in logistical problems for students and staff.

The reconfiguration of the existing buildings combined with the construction of an extension to provide additional Science and ICT teaching space has overcome these logistical problems and the widened corridors with break-out spaces provided opportunities for informal learning. Close collaborative working between all Design Team members enabled the construction works to be completed whilst the School remained fully operational.
