New Printing Plant, Dinnington, Yorkshire Johnston Press PLC

Building on a 25 year track record of delivering projects to clients within the newspaper printing sector Thornton-Firkin LLP were selected by Johnston Press Plc to deliver a new £60 million state of the art print centre in the north of England. Replacing the historic inner city centre printing base of the Sheffield Star this new facility was one of the major developments to be delivered by Johnston Press as part of its progressive expansion to establish itself as a main player in the industry.

Developed on an extensively remediated 3 acre colliery site the new facility was the lead development within Yorkshire bringing valuable economic regeneration to the area.

The new building is a 12,000m2 state of the art printing centre with expansive reel store, press hall, mailroom and associated pre-press and office accommodation and was selected as the world’s first installation site for the new cutting edge triple-width MAN Roland printing presses. Constructed to a very high specification and design standards the development includes a highly complex mechanical and electrical services installation, comprehensive fire safety systems and extensive specialist newspaper printing process systems.

Thornton-Firkin LLP provided complete Project Management, Cost Consultancy and CDM services to Johnston Press from site selection feasibility stage to completion of defects. The project was successfully delivered on time and within budget.
