Redevelopment of Theatre Royal, Newcastle upon Tyne

Thornton-Firkin were appointed as Cost Consultants on the Phase 1 redevelopment of the Grade 1 listed Theatre Royal in the heart of Newcastle. This scheme required the alteration, conversion and extension of the Theatre into the adjacent vacant Bank building.

The enabled the Theatre to continue its growth and maintain their position as of one of the major Theatres in the North.  The works comprised :

  • Creation of an extended stage that involved forming a major structural opening in the party wall
  • New stage flying system
  • Refurbishment of the back of house areas including a new green room
  • New commercial, corporate , educational, toilets, catering and box office facilities within the extension
  • New lift and alteration to ensure full disabled circulation throughout the Theatre
  • Bridge link to the rear linking the new building at high level

The project involved a significant workload and which had to be completed during a tight ‘dark’ period when the Theatre was closed to public performances but the staff areas and booking office remained open.  The project continued for a further six months on site with the Theatre re-opening for public performances.  This was a good example of how projects can be delivered with limited disruption and loss to the Client with the public in close proximity to the site.
