The Chain Bridge, Llangollen
The Chain Bridge crosses the fast flowing River Dee at Berwyn, Llangollen. The landmark structure, constructed in 1929, had become derelict and been closed to the public since 1985. Ownership passed to the neighbouring authorities of Llangollen Town Council and Llantysilio Community Council who secured grant funding for its restoration.

The river is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, Special Area of Conservation and has the Llangollen Steam Heritage Railway passing on one site permitting pedestrian access only. A public footpath, hotel and World Heritage Status Llangollen Canal complete with Scheduled Monument cutting providing bridge supports are on the other side of the river resulting in significantly restricted access to the bridge.
Working in conjunction with structural engineers Ramboll, Thornton-Firkin provided quantity surveying services on the project which involved the contractor dismantling the bridge, removing to his workshop to refurbish and/or replace the components and then reconstruct during the winter of 2014/15. These services included tender procurement of a logistically highly complex contract and undertaking post contract financial control
The bridge re-opened to the public in May 2015 and has returned to its previous popularity as a popular walking destination
