Our detailed understanding of the Education Sector has enabled us to take an active role in the delivery of both PFI and Academy School projects as part of the Governments educational policies.

  • Entrance to Selangor Court

    Selangor Court, Wellington College

    Selangor Court is a glazed steel and cast iron canopy structure providing a sheltered walkway between the main school Dining Hall and the pupils’ cafe within the centre of the original school buildings dating back to the Victorian era. The paving beneath the canopy is a combination of resin bound gravel and stone.

    The Girls’ Day School Trust

    CONGRATULATIONS to Oxford High School for winning the Oxford City Council David Steel Sustainable Buildings Award for the Performing Arts/Dining Development. Through this award The City Council aims to recognise leading sustainable building developments in Oxford and the developments are assessed on the level and quality of the environmentally friendly solutions incorporated.

  • Helsby High School, Frodsham

    Helsby High School, Frodsham

    Helsby High School was originally conceived in 1938 as a split Boys and Girls Grammar School, but due to the shortage of building materials during World War II the schools were not completed until 1949. The Girls and Boys Schools were amalgamated as part of the Comprehensive education system, but due to the symmetrical design of the buildings circulation routes were extremely constrained resulting in logistical problems for students and staff.

    Kajima Partnerships

    Since Thornton-Firkin LLP’s first appointment with Kajima Partnerships in 2000 we have provided Employers Agent/Quantity Surveying Services on ten PFI projects with six successful bids being taken through from Invitation to Tender to completion of the building projects on site. The vast majority of the schemes are in the Education Sector but others include Fire and Rescue and Library projects.

  • Talbot House, Wellington College

    Wellington College, Crowthorne, Berkshire

    Wellington College was first proposed in early 1850s by the Prime Minister of the day, Lord Edward Stanley, 14th Earl of Derby, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. They agreed that a charitable educational institution should be set up in memory of the great Duke, for the orphans of army officers, with the money to be raised by subscription. Since it foundation the College has established itself as a leading co-educational boarding school.

    Trent Valley Academy, Gainsborough

    Lincolnshire County Council built its first new Secondary School in forty years, in Gainsborough. To assist them in this, Thornton-Firkin were appointed as Project Managers by HBS, acting on behalf of the County Council, for Gainsborough Educational Village, a project with a value of £20million.

    The RC Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle

    Thornton-Firkin LLP have been working on school projects with The RC Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle since 2001 and are on their approved consultants list providing project management, cost control and CDM Co-ordinator services. During the intervening period we have managed in excess of 100 projects in Primary and Secondary schools, the majority of which need to be planned, designed, tendered and built in a 4-5 month period to co-incide with the school summer recess.
