Restoration of Medieval Lighthouse tower and Monastic Cell at Coquet Island

Thornton-Firkin have recently completed Works on a restoration of a Medieval tower and Monastic Cell at Coquet Island near Amble off the Northumberland Coast. This also involved the refurbishment of an adjacent cottage to provide accommodation for RSPB as the site in an area of specific interest for protection of birds. The works were phased to take into account the weather and bird resting season when no contractors or even people are allowed on the island.

This unfortunately is from April to September, the ideal time to undertake these works with the weather and tides, so this project was logistically very testing.

The works were jointly funded by the English Heritage, RSPB, Trinity House and Northumberland Estates.  The initial aim of the project was to remove the tower and cell off the English Heritage’s at Risk Register.

The project was completed to budget and recently won the Construction Excellence in the North East Conservation Awards.
