Durham Cathedral has just opened up to the public their new retail facility which has been relocated from the Great Kitchen (as this space is required for future exhibition works). This was traditionally procured using competitively tendered Bills of Quantities with a construction value of £1,400,000. There were significant issues during the Contract as public access had to be maintained to the adjacent cafe through out the works and a new gas main has been brought to the new plant area through the World Heritage site which involved significant archaeological input. The fit out was of a high quality and of a sensitive nature to reflect the environment where this retail space was located.
While Thornton-Firkin acting as Cost Consultants for the Dean and Chapter at the Cathedral Church of St Nicholas as part of the first phase of their Redevelopment Master Plan have just completed the £500,000 lighting upgrade and electrical alterations contract. Further subsequent works are planned in the forthcoming years to improve the Nave floors and heating as well as upgrade to the toilets and access to the adjacent Cathedral Hall.
